Montage Condos close down Sierra Street, Downtown Reno

We’re breaking up, can’t hold it any longer; that must have been what the workers were saying today as construction debris, plastic, signs etc. went flying off of Downtown Reno’s luxury condominium complex the Montage.

The Reno Tahoe International Airport registered high sustained winds at times and planes were diverted.  The Mount Rose Ski Area had 79 miles per hour wind and remained closed since early am.  That was enough wind to knock out power in Montreux, Callahan Ranch, Galena Forest and Legend Trails, down a 1oo + year old tree in Old Southwest Reno (OSO district).

There is a real art to anchoring down fences, furniture, trampolines, play-sets etc., unfortunately, I learned the hard way.  I have lost sheds, and all of the above mentioned, you learn after a while not to buy wicker furniture for example.

The first trampoline we had, I had anchored down with sandbags, stakes and large flat rocks.  I thought I was ready for a 100 miler one day and a flash caught my eye.  The matt, the actual trampoline part of it sans frame took across the sky towards downtown Reno, I was hoping it landed somewhere safe.  What I neglected to do was tape all of the joints, and I don’t mean duct tape, I use the actual silver tape that they use for; well ducts (but it is not called duct tape).

My blogmaster, Ben and I were holding down his Gazebo on the day my trampoline flew away, we were afraid to let go, his wife finally got a rope to tie it down, it must have been comical watching.

Every once in a while, I will be selling in a particularly windy part of town and I am asked if it is windy here?  My general answer is; all of Nevada is windy, some more than others, depending on who you talk to, this may be one of them.  At that point, I usually point out trees that look like a bent over windswept tree on the coast to answer their question.  I don’t think it is illegal to discriminate on wind YET but you never know what may become politically incorrect so I kind of soften the answer a little with humor.  Heck, I can’t even mention a word that starts with ch and ends in ch a.k.a. places of worship these politically correct days.

This wind thing in Reno/Nevada is one reason why so many people request their backyard to not face South or West; it is a mixed blessing request as you don’t enjoy the Sierra views and the sun exposure in the winter months.  The catch 22 with the sun is you get cooked in the summer if you have large windows and a backyard with the south/west exposure.   Again, I learned this one from experience firsthand, believe me.

Anyhow, it is late, I have been on some San Francisco blogs and a few San Jose ones trying to sort this market uptick out; is this a head fake or the real thing, I guess time will tell.
